Research Labs & People — CFAL Research Centre, Mangaluru
CFAL Research Centre · Est. 2023

The people doing the work.

A 2-year-old research centre led by a scientist with 100+ publications and five researchers who left traditional academia to work on urban sustainability, cognition, and pedagogy — in Mangaluru and Mysuru.

What the Research Centre is doing right now.

Flagship Project · Active

Mysuru Comprehensive Tree Census

A partnership with Mysore Grahakara Parishat (MGP) and SDMIMD to conduct the first comprehensive tree census of Mysuru — using the "Mangalore Model" of digital auditing developed by CFAL. Every tree geotagged with species ID, GPS coordinates, canopy classification, and health status.

Active now

Why this matters: The methodology — geotagging, survival tracking, satellite validation — is replicable. If it works in Mysuru, it works in any Indian city. This census is both a research project and a proof of concept for national-scale urban forestry data.

Ongoing · Mangaluru

AMARA — Urban Greening

Mangaluru's public green cover: 6.24%. Target: 30% by 2040. 11,000+ trees of 145 species planted and geotagged across 60 wards. 40,000 mangrove saplings at Adamkudru (Syngene CSR / Biocon Foundation). Digital auditing for transparency and survival tracking.

The Research Team

Five scientists. Five disciplines. One mission.

What makes this team unusual is not their current titles — it's where they came from. Each researcher brought deep expertise from a traditional academic field and redirected it toward applied sustainability and education. The "hidden expertise" is what makes the work rigorous.

Dr Rasmi Rao
Dr. Rashmi Rao
Environmental Scientist
Academic background: Neuroscience & Biotechnology. Studied anxiety responses and ultrasonic vocalisations (USVs) in murine models. Trained in molecular biology, behavioural assay design, and quantitative data analysis.
At CFAL: Maps groundwater quality and chemical pollutant distribution. Applies her quantitative training to environmental monitoring — the same rigour that tracked neural pathways in mice now tracks contamination pathways in aquifers.
DR. RASHMI BHAT
Dr. Rashmi Bhat
Ecologist · AMARA Project Lead
Academic background: Wildlife Biology. Expert in tiger tracking, elephant-human conflict mitigation, and large mammal conservation. Field ecology in some of India's most demanding landscapes.
At CFAL: Leads the AMARA project — counting every tree in Mangaluru for urban carbon data. Now leading the Mysuru tree census. Her field ecology skills — built tracking tigers in forests — are applied to tracking trees in cities. Also building the CFAL herbarium (100+ specimens target) and training in phylogenetics.
DR. ASHA CRASTA
Dr. Asha Crasta
Environmental Modeller
Academic background: Applied Mathematics. Expert in hypersonic flow dynamics and delta wing aerodynamics. Published research on computational fluid dynamics at extreme conditions.
At CFAL: Uses mathematical modelling to calculate fluid dynamics in environmental systems — water flow through urban drainage, air circulation in heat islands, pollutant dispersion patterns. The same equations that model airflow over a delta wing at Mach 5 can model how monsoon water moves through a city.
DR. DEVADAS
Dr. Devadas
Sustainability Lead
Academic background: Physics and Urban Planning. Expert in urban systems modelling and solar energy. Research on how energy, infrastructure, and policy interact at city scale.
At CFAL: Coordinates how energy, water, and waste systems work together in sustainability planning. Connects the tree census data, groundwater monitoring, and building design into a coherent urban sustainability framework. The systems thinker who holds the pieces together.
DR. NIKHIL
Dr. Nikhil
Technical Lead
Academic background: Applied Science. Skilled in technical implementation, instrumentation, and sensor design.
At CFAL: Ensures the sensors, geotagging tools, and data infrastructure for field projects work reliably. Built the technical backbone for the Mysuru tree census and AMARA data collection. The person who makes the science operational.

"A neuroscientist mapping groundwater. A wildlife biologist counting urban trees. A hypersonic mathematician modelling monsoon drainage. This is what happens when serious researchers choose to work on problems that matter — in the cities where they live."
