Dr. Devadas Bhat’s research focuses on advancing next-generation biodegradable metallic materials for biomedical applications. His work centres on designing and characterizing magnesium-based alloys for use in cardiovascular and orthopaedic implants, addressing the growing clinical need for sustainable, biocompatible and patient-friendly solutions.
By combining alloy development with state-of-the-art microscopies, spectroscopies, mechanical testing and in-situ analysis techniques, he investigates how microstructure influences corrosion behaviour and mechanical performance under physiological conditions.
His research also explores strategies to tailor degradation rates, improve biocompatibility, and integrate additive manufacturing for custom implant design. With experience spanning collaborations in France, Singapore, Denmark, and leading Indian institutes, his long-term vision is to build an interdisciplinary program that bridges materials science and biomedical engineering. His group aims to translate fundamental insights in degradable metals into clinically impactful solutions that enhance patient outcomes while promoting innovation in medical materials.
Dr. Nagaraj’s research focuses on biopolymers and their interdisciplinary applications, building upon her expertise in Microbial Biotechnology. Her work explores the development and characterization of biocompatible polymer-based composites for biomedical and environmental applications. She is particularly interested in integrating biological and chemical approaches to design sustainable biomaterials, including magnesium- and silica-based formulations, with potential use in implant development and functional materials research. Through this interdisciplinary focus, she guides projects that advance innovative and eco-conscious solutions at the interface of biology and material science.
Her research also focused on developing bacterial exopolysaccharide-based bioinks. This involved studying the physico-chemical and biological properties of these formulations and evaluating their wound-healing potential on excision and burn wound models. She has extensive experience in microbial production of biopolymers, cell culture-based assays, and handling of animal models for wound studies.
Dr. Nikil Purushotham focuses on research at the interface of Chemistry and Biology, working on the synthesis of new bioactive organic compounds and exploring their potential to solve some of the existing problems in the area of Medicinal Chemistry. The synthesis and exploration of fluorescent organic materials and their applications is another area of research that is of potential interest to him.
