Prof. Dr. Smitha Hegde’s research spans the conservation of medicinal plants and tree species with a focus on documenting, propagating and safeguarding threatened flora. She is also known for her pioneering contributions to phytoremediation and abiotic stress studies, particularly heavy metal tolerance as well as her extensive and nationally recognised work on the diversity, ecology, and biotechnology of pteridophytes
Her multidisciplinary research focuses on:
Her research philosophy emphasizes “Science for Society”, blending field ecology with molecular science and citizen engagement through Tree Counting initiatives like AMARA. She has redefined community participation in climate action, enabling students and citizens to contribute to open biodiversity databases.
Dr. Rashmi K. is a dedicated plant taxonomist whose research focuses on the floristic and ecological characterization of low-altitude grasslands in the southern coastal region of the Western Ghats, one of the world’s most significant biodiversity hotspots. Her work has led to the discovery and description of several new species and varieties, including Eriocaulon gopalakrishnanum, Blyxa mangalensis, and Eriocaulon lanceolatum var. bhatkalense, published in leading journals such as the Nordic Journal of Botany, Kew Bulletin, and Rheedea.
Dr. Rashmi is passionate about biodiversity documentation, conservation outreach and science communication, contributing actively to research and field-based studies. Through her combined efforts in taxonomy, teaching, outreach and conservation, she contributes significantly to the understanding and protection of botanical richness of the Western Ghats.
